• Former president alleged to have released implicating documents against top PDP members to Buhari
By Debo Popoola
The downfall of every kingdom or empire always starts from within, thus the saying that if there are no cracks in the wall, the lizard will not penetrate. History has seen powerful empires and kingdoms crumbled just because someone within got compromised. The PDP was once a political empire strong and powerful, alas, the party is witnessing its gradual destruction.
The recent probes by President Buhari of various corruption allegations of the past administration have seen many of the powerful individuals in the party being indicted, arrested and incarcerated.
Those that used to ride on horses of privilege and honour have seen themselves treated like ardent criminals; notable among them are Raymond Dokpesi, Sambo Dasuki and Olisa Metuh, all of the PDP. But while many of the party members are being arrested and investigated, former president Goodluck Jonathan has remained silent and unperturbed.
Prior to the commencement of the investigation of the arms deal scandal, former president Jonathan and president Buhari had series of meetings at the villa. Noboby knew what those meetings centered on until recently when information begins to filter that Goodluck Jonathan had submitted vital implicating documents to Buhari, and these documents have been the bedrock on which the on-going allegations against top PDP members are grounded on.
According to a reliable source who spoke anonymously to TheCapital, many of the top PDP chieftains are very unhappy and disappointed at former president Goodluck Jonathan and they felt he has betrayed them by first, not saying anything since the arms deal scandal began, and he is being suspected to have tendered those implicating documents to the presidency.
The source also made it known that Jonathan might have submitted those vital documents under duress, and in order to save his own soul from the investigation. It will be recalled that after those series of discreet meetings at the villa, President Buhari hinted that Jonathan will not be personally indicted; this apparently suggests the reward or the price for Jonathan’s cooperation.
