Controversy raged on social media on Friday over the gay status declaration of Bolu, son of former Presidential Adviser, Dr. Doyin Okupe.

Dr. Okupe had described Bolu’s decision to openly declare himself a homosexual a spiritual challenge.

“But I know as my God liveth, this whole saga will end up in praise to the Almighty Jehovah who I serve day and night.”

He said he had been “aware of this his new orientation for a while now.”

He added: “He (Bolu) knows that as a Christian and a witness for Christ (an evangelist), I am vehemently opposed to homosexuality as it runs contrary to the avowed precepts of my Christian faith.”

Many Nigerians went on Twitter to support or denounce the position of the former presidential spokesman.

One contributor @Dr.olufunmilayo said: “The son of Doyin Okupe (former President Jonathan’s aide) has come out as gay. Jonathan was President when the law that sends all gay people to jail was signed. So right now as it stands, if the son of Doyin Okupe comes to Nigeria, he will be jailed- a law his father supported.

His view was shared by Pamela Adie @pamelaadie who tweeted:”Let’s not forget that Doyin Okupe was a senior aide to President Jonathan and vehemently supported him when he signed the SSMPA into law in 2014; a dangerous law that violently harms so many in this country. Now, Okupe’s son has announced that he is gay. I love life!

Dr. Okwuebie1 @okwuebie1 Said: “For all who were directly or remotely connected to the initiation of the bill for that Act, those who considered, deliberated and passed it from 1st, 2nd & 3rd readings before it was presented to be signed into law, and yes, you who signed it, we’re waiting for your children. They’ll come out of their closet and you’ll be powerless about it. We wait!

Matthew B. Bassey @comsirmatt: “What a wasteful generation! Inasmuch I would love to respect people decision about their ways of life but the standard set by the creator of life will I always abide to. Even animals who are mentally incapacitated when making decisions won’t even engage in such act.”

Ronikade @Ronikade1: “Okupe has his life to live so does his son who is an adult and both are answerable individually only to their maker! So rest!”

JessicaB @Jessica12754192: “There is a huge generational gap between us and our parents. It is simply an issue of how Doyin Okupe understands his son’s choices, we seek freedom, their generation sought acceptance sometimes these things happen to balance generational gaps.”

liscolite @IkumapayiJ: “Make all of una rest… D guy dey find way seek asylum… Na hustle,” to which

Da gay doc @Iyequs Responded: “He’s in France, relax and we’ve known he’s gay even before he came out.”

Bolu announced his gay status in an Instagram post in which he held a LGBTQ flag behind.
