The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has taken a swipe at Nigerians who have declared their intentions to embark on a nationwide protest against hardship and hunger in the country.

“We are not interested in regime change, let us own this government. Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be there eating,” he said.

The scheduled protest is set to hold on August 1,2024 and continue for ten days, ending on August 10.

Members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) who are opposed to the planned protest have described the move as a ploy to cause chaos in President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

Akpabio noted that he believes in the regime change of Tinubu and that “All of us feel the impact of what is happening now. But we are aware it will be for a short while,” the Senate President said.

“MD, I want to thank you for what you said. You said we are not interested in regime change, let us own this government.

“Those who want to protest can protest, but let us be there eating — I must thank the Niger Delta.

“So in conclusion, we acknowledge the fact that the impact of oil and gas activities in our region has done immeasurable damage to our people.”

Nigerians in response took to social media to share their thoughts. Many who are not pleased with his remarks called him arrogant and heartless who is not fit to lead. They claim Akpabio is mocking the suffering of Nigerians.
