Amid the ongoing conflict with Israel and Iran-backed militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah, the Jewish country is planning something which may just shift the tides of the war. As per reports by local media, Israel is planning to introduce ‘Iron Beam’, an air defence system.
The ‘Iron Beam’ will use high-power lasers to shoot down incoming projectiles coming from its enemies. After Israel inducts the Iron beam, the air defence system of the country will strengthen and might turn the waves in its favour.
What’s ‘Iron Beam’ air defence system?
Israel’s defence ministry said it had signed a 2 billion shekel ($536-million) deal with local contractors to expand production of a new laser-based missile defence system that could be operational in the next year. …CONTINUE READING
The deal signed with state-owned Rafael Advanced Defense Systems and Elbit Systems is for a high-power laser called Iron Beam that is designed to counter aerial threats, including rockets, mortar bombs, drones and cruise missiles. It will supplement the Iron Dome system, which shoots down rockets and missiles fired at Israel, using radar-guided missiles to blow up short-range threats.
The defense department of Israel recently updated that the introduction of a new anti-missile defense mechanism will exponentially improve the efficiency of existing systems like Iron Dome, signifying the onset of an evolutionary period in warfare strategies. This significant upgrade is anticipated to be up and running within the upcoming year.
Eyal Zamir, the director general of Israel’s defence ministry, said the Iron Beam deal “heralds the beginning of a new era in warfare.” Iron Beam is seen by experts as a much cheaper alternative for neutralising enemy rockets and drones than the interceptor missiles Israel currently uses.
Israel’s $530 million Iron Beam
On Monday, Israel made headlines with their defense department’s declaration that a whopping $530 million has been set aside to fast-track the development of their innovative laser air defence system known as “Iron Beam”.
Further details divulged in an official press release show a substantial agreement with an impressive worth of nearly 2 billion shekels, all aimed towards accelerating the production of the laser interception systems fondly named ‘Iron Beam’.
