After touring several parts of the globe with her unique brand of music, dread locked musician Asa, whose real is Bukola Elemide, on Sunday, finally performed her first major concert in Lagos.
For the France-born Nigerian, the roost was the stage of the Convention Centre of the Eko Hotel and Suites and Lagosians were not disappointed as the soul-singer held the audience spellbound for two hours. From her first song of the night, Maybe, Asa energetically performed songs from her three studio albums.
The event which had Olisa Adiba as host, had artistes such as Isaac Geralds, Bez Idakula, Rachel Kerr, Kaline and Falana set the mood for the night. And when the queen took the stage, the crowd responded by cheering, dancing, jumping and screaming, electrified by her songs.
The 33 year-old musician also had a duet with prolific music producer and musician Cobhams Asuquo on a cover Beyonce’s Halo.
‘He makes songs that inspire people around the world,’ said Asa on Instagram of Cobhams. ‘A dyng man’s last wish, was for his family to see our show in Australia. He asked that we played ‘Fire on the mountain’ this is the genius of @CobhamsAsuquo.’
Since Asa came out with her first album, Asa which had tracks like Jailer, Fire On The Mountain, Awe and Bibanke, many Nigerians had not seen Asa perform live as she had not done a concert in the country.
But with accolades after Sunday’s show, it seemed the wait was worthwhile and Asa took to social media to thank Lagos.
Television show host Funmi Iyanda described her performance as magical.
‘So @Asa_official gave Lagos magic yesterday,’ she tweeted.
2I knew she would. She’s magic. Now, Lagos, Nigeria, don’t look back, be more magic.’
As it stands, Asa seems to have raise the standard of musical concerts in the country.
‘Asa has held her first ever concert in Lagos,’ said Joey Akan, a music critic at Pulse.ng. ‘And that concert was historic.’
Some Nigerian artistes that turned up for the event include Bovi, Adekunle Gold, Omawumi and Waje.
