Amid escalating violence in Nigeria’s south- east, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, issued a direct order to Simon Ekpa, his self- proclaimed disciple, to cease the controversial sit- at- home orders in the region
The letter, handwritten by Kanu was addressed to Ekpa, the self- proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile (BRGIE). Kanu’s message was unequivocal, urging an end to directives that have caused significant hardship for residents of the region. …CONTINUE READING
Kanu, who has been detained by Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja since 2021 following his extradition from Kenya, expressed his disapproval of the sit- at- home protests that have disrupted daily life and inflicted economic hardship. In the letter, he called on Ekpa to publicly acknowledge and adhere to his instructions,
The letter stated: ” Simon (Ekpa), this is a direct order from me. I hereby instruct you to desist from calling for any sit- at- home henceforth.
“Equally refrain from antagonising governors or persons in political positions because you are not in a position to know what they are doing on my behalf.
“I embarked on this movement to liberate our people, not to enslave them. I despise and will despise any person or entity that wishes to inflict unnecessary hardship on our people.’
Kanu also authorised his special counsel Barrister Aloy Ejimakor, to issue a press statement if Ekpa failed to comply with the directive.
In response, Ekpa dismissed the letter, alleging it was fabricated by what he described as the ” Islamic SSS. ” He rejected the directive, stating: ” As the prime minister of Biafra under the leadership of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, I call on all Biafrans to disregard the fake letter coming from the SSS. We can’ t take any order from the Islamic SSS, and that is final. ”
Ekpa’ s defiance came as violence and unrest, attributed to the enforcement of sit- at- home orders, continued to grip the region. Observers have noted that the orders have led to loss of lives and severe disruptions to businesses and education.
Despite Ekpa’ s denial, IPOB spokesman Emma Powerful and Kanu’ s younger brother, Emma Kanu, confirmed the authenticity of the letter. Speaking on the matter, Emma Kanu stated: ” Anybody doubting it is insane. ”
Additionally, Barrister Ejimakor shared copies of Kanu’ s letter on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle to bolster its credibility. Ejimakor emphasised that the orders from Kanu were meant to alleviate the suffering of the people, a stance supported by several prominent figures within the IPOB movement.
