In Minna, the capital of Niger State, three prominent ex-leaders and former National Security Adviser (NSA), General Aliyu Gusau (Rtd), recently gathered to strategize their plan to take over the party.
According to a highly reliable inside source familiar with the meeting, the primary goals of the gathering of senior retired Generals were to take back control of the party’s structures from Wike and to pinpoint a strong Presidential candidate capable of defeating the current President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The retired Generals voiced worries about the management of the PDP, fearing it could pave the way for Nigeria to shift towards a one-party state. Consequently, they joined forces to devise strategies and chart a path forward for the party.
A group of former military leaders, who are said to be dissatisfied with President Tinubu’s approach to leadership, are currently engaged in the search for a potential presidential candidate for the upcoming 2027 election.
In 1998, Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo, and Aliyu Mohammed Gusau played pivotal roles in the establishment of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

When initially approached during his vacation in the United States of America (USA), David Mark declined the challenging task of preventing the disappearance of the PDP.
The ex-Senate President and military Governor of Niger state, who originates from Benue, ultimately consented to the request of Gen Babangida, who is recognized as his long-standing mentor and supporter.
During the private meeting, Babangida, Abdulsalam, and Gusau expressed their support for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the presidential candidate for their party, while Obasanjo advocated for Mr. Peter Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), in the upcoming 2027 election.
