US authorities have arrested 538 individuals accused of being illegal immigrants and deported hundreds more in a large-scale operation, shortly after President Donald Trump’s second administration began, according to his press secretary.

Trump had pledged a strict approach to illegal immigration, and his second term began with swift executive actions aimed at overhauling immigration policies.
He declared a “national emergency” at the US southern border and ordered the deployment of additional troops while prioritizing the deportation of “criminal aliens.”
In response to the crackdown, Newark City Mayor Ras J. Baraka issued a statement Thursday condemning Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents for reportedly conducting a raid at a local business, where both undocumented residents and citizens were detained without a warrant.
Earlier in the week, the Republican-controlled US Congress passed legislation to expand pretrial detention for foreign criminal suspects.
