The cost of cement has surged by 30%, reaching N9000 in major towns like Abuja, Sokoto, Ilorin, and more, as distributors implement fresh price increases. Despite Nigeria being a leading cement producer, the rise is attributed to high inflation impacting the building materials market.
In the Federal Capital Territory’s Kubwa area, Dangote cement is now priced between N8,600 and N9,600, while BUA ranges from N8,500 to N9,500. Similar trends are observed in Ibadan, Oyo State, where cement is priced at N9000.
Sokoto witnesses Dangote cement at N9,200 and BUA at N8,650, while in Ilorin, BUA is priced at N8,700, and Dangote at N9000. The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, plans to engage cement manufacturers to understand challenges, mitigate rising costs, and find sustainable solutions.
Expressing concern over frequent price hikes, Minister Dangiwa emphasized the need for transparency from manufacturers, who source raw materials locally. The government aims to ensure decent and affordable housing for low- and medium-income earners, promising action to address the escalating cement prices.
