• Pundits flay ruling party for prosecuting lopsided anti-corruption fight
There is no gainsaying the All Progressives Congress (APC) is out for the blood of perceived opposition. Like the proverbial tyrant who decapitated dissenting members of his clan to spite his detractors, forgetting that he was killing off his own family, the APC may have just begun its descent into the labyrinth of self-destruct by its frantic witch-hunt of businessmen and corporate titans perceived to be friendly to its major political opposition, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
But while the APC hounds and harasses the country’s corporate titans that are loyal or sympathetic towards the PDP in its anti-corruption campaign, the ruling party conveniently forgets to extend equal treatment to its cronies with shades of corruption baggage. Pundits are of the opinion that President Muhammadu Buhari ought to beam his administration’s anti-corruption searchlight on established crooks in his presidency and within the APC. For instance, they finger certain members of President Buhari’s cabinet as unworthy of their appointments as federal ministers given their corruption baggage. Likewise, several businessmen who are loyal to the APC are overlooked as the party intensifies it’s anti-corruption fight. The APC would rather not investigate such characters; instead, the party protects those loyal to it from inquiry or harassment of any kind.
Recently, United Kingdom based Telegraph newspaper published that hundreds of millions of pounds of British foreign aid given to Nigeria to help combat Boko Haram terrorists was instead being used to fund a witch-hunt against opposition politicians thus substantiating the argument that the APC’s anti-corruption campaign is merely a ploy to check-mate and decimate perceived opposition.
Pundits condemn the conduct of President Buhari, the EFCC and the DSS in the so called fight against corruption. They consider their conduct an embarrassment to democracy and the Nigerian nation. According to them, the anti-corruption crusade is a charade, because it negates all known principles of justice and democracy.
