· Why she deserted Edo government house to plead on Broad Street
Betsy Obaseki is desperate to eat her cake and have it. Like the inexorable merchant, she is afflicted with covetousness, the sacred hunger of ambitious minds. She is conflicted too. The wife of Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki, is grappling to hold down two very lucrative jobs as you read.
Although she became First Lady of Edo State after her husband was sworn in on November 12, 2016, she has continued to hold on to her job at the Bank of Industry (BOI). While she serves as Edo’s number one lady, she also keeps a very lucrative title as the Head, Strategy and Planning Unit of the bank’s subsidiary, BOI Investment and Trust Company (BOITC).
The bank’s administration waited in vain for over three months for Betsy to turn in her resignation/retirement letter or request for leave of absence but the Edo First Lady has refused to do so. Rather she clings tenaciously to her post at the BOITC thus enjoying enviable proceeds from two positions within government circuits.
Consequently, the bank’s management sent her a notification in that respect. But interestingly, no sooner than she received the bank’s letter than Betsy rushed to the bank’s headquarters at Broad Street, Lagos, to plead for more time. She allegedly claimed that she needed more time to take a decision.
“Had it been she is serving in Lagos as the First Lady, the management of the bank would not have bothered because she can still make it to the office regularly but not in this case where she is in Benin. The long and short of the story is that her job in BOITC is suffering,” stated a source in the bank.
