Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, on Tuesday morning, arrested the Chairman/Managing Director of Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, at his residence in the GRA area of Enugu State.
It was gathered that the EFCC operatives, who were accompanied by heavily armed policemen, stormed Chukwuma’s residence at Savage Crescent, GRA, Enugu, as early as 7:30 am.
Eye witnesses informed our correspondent that security men guarding the residence resisted attempts by the EFCC team to gain entry into the building.
There were reports of continuous shooting, as the operatives fired tear gas, and cordoned off the area, before overpowering the security personnel at the residence.
It was learnt that Chukwuma was whisked away by the EFCC operatives.
The development is said to be connected to a legal dispute between the businessman and Guaranty Trust Bank.
The street where the residence was located was calm when our correspondent visited on Tuesday afternoon.
Efforts by our correspondent to gain access into the compound was not successful, as the security personnel at the residence refused to open the gate.
But a youth in the neighbourhood, who said he witnessed the incident, said the EFCC team ‘clashed’ with the security personnel at Innoson’s residence before arresting Chukwuma.
The youth, who did not wish to be named, added that “people living in the neighbourhood” protested against attempts by the EFCC to arrest the car manufacturer.
“Innoson’s neighbours rushed out of their houses when they got wind of the arrival of the EFCC team.
“They were shouting and protesting against the development, and the EFCC had to shoot into the air and fire tear gas in a bid to disperse them,” the youth said.
