• Wife miserable as friends and political associates desert Fani-Kayode
A man should learn to pick his battles very wisely. Even a career fool would never take a knife to a gun-fight. But Femi Fani-Kayode, former Minister of Aviation and publicity director of ex-president Goodluck Jonathan re-election train, like a suicidal jester, brandished a jack-knife to fight cannon balls.
The consequence of course, is better imagined. As you read, Fani-Kayode is still in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), few days after he walked into the anti-graft agency’s office for interrogation over his complicity in the ongoing anti-corruption investigation.
The EFCC has seized the international passport of the former minister, who served as the Director of Publicity of the Goodluck Jonathan during the 2015 presidential election. Fani-Kayode was arrested two weeks ago for receiving N840m. The money, which he admitted to receiving, was said to have emanated from the account of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Although the EFCC had given the ex-minister bail conditions, the agency refused to release him despite meeting the conditions. It is however, sad to note that in Fani-Kayode’s moment of terror, his friends and associates in the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have deserted him. Nobody has come out to speak in defence of Fani-Kayode as the latter persistently did in defence of the PDP and friends in the party before his arrest.
Only his new wife and former beauty queen, Precious Chikwendu, seems to be experiencing grief over the sad fate of the former minister. Pundits are of the opinion that Fani-Kayode’s wild and constant inclinations to attack President Muhammadu Buhari and his ruling party in bitter public criticisms is responsible for his current travail.
Many are of the opinion that, the anti-graft agency may have denied him bail to punish him for his random anti-
Buhari and anti-APC commentary. However, that is simply a minor reason for his incarceration; if Fani-Kayode was culpable, he wouldn’t be in EFCC custody, so argued another school of thought. These are indeed the worst of times for Fani-Kayode.
