Investigative journalist Jackson Ude has claimed that Minister of State for Defence Muhammad Bello Matawalle allegedly facilitated the escape of former Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to Niger Republic.
According to Ude’s report on X on Thursday, Bello, who is facing charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for alleged looting during his tenure, has repeatedly avoided arrest and prosecution.
Ude alleges that intelligence indicates Matawalle, a close ally of Bello, mobilized eight military personnel to escort the former governor to Niger Republic via Kebbi State. …CONTINUE READING
The convoy reportedly used two dark tinted Hilux pickups and a Land Cruiser to transport Bello through the border town of lllela.
Ude further claims that former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai was also involved in the alleged escape scheme.

“Minister of State, Defence, Muhammad Bello Matawalle has allegedly facilitated the escape of the embattled former Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello, to escape to Niger Republic, using military personnel. Yahaya Bello who is facing charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for looting over N80billion during his reign as Governor of Kogi state, has repeatedly evaded arrest and prosecution.
“Credible intelligence indicates that Minister of State, Defence, Matawalle, a close ally of Bello, mobilized military personnel who helped the former Kogi Governor to escape to Niger Republic. According to the intelligence, eight Army personnel escorted Yahaya Bello through Kebbi state via Illela, a border town, using two dark tinted Hilux pick up and a Land Cruiser carrying the former Kogi Governor. Former Kaduna Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, was also part of the scheme that helped Yahaya Bello escape.
