No fewer than four inmates were reportedly killed during an attempted jailbreak in Ile-Ife, Osun State yesterday.
It was gathered that the incident happened at Correctional Centre, Kosere area of Ile-Ife.
A top security source who confided in our correspondent said that inmates had premeditated planned to break out of the correctional centre.
“At about a few minutes past 9 AM on Tuesday, some inmates after their devotion exercise approached the main entrance of the centre in the pretence they are going about their normal duties.
“While they were wandering at the entrance of the Corrections, they attacked a warder close to the entrance and they advanced to escape from the facility.
“The alertness of the security operatives manning the facility, stopped the jailbreak as they shot four of the inmates dead, the others fled from the entrance where their colleagues attempted to escape from,” he said.
When the spokesman for Correctional Centre, Osun State, Mr Shola Adeotan was contacted, he said: “I will get back to you on the matter.”
The spokesperson of Osun State Police Command, SP Yemisi Opalola confirmed the attempted jailbreak.
She said: “There was attempted jailbreak at Correctional Centre, Ile-Ife but information about it is not yet available.”
