If urgent measures are not taken, Ikoyi, known to be the epitome of orderliness, serenity and urban pride, will soon become the shadow of its old self as its golden days seem to be taking a leave due to the environmental distortion that is fast becoming the lot of the area lately.
The residents of Ikoyi are now subjected to hardship by some powerful forces whose property is not only housing a fleet of water tankers but those tankers in large numbers have also taken over the streets, thereby making traffic flow and ease a thing of the past.
The said property was found to have been leased to a businessman who uses it as parking space for the tankers. Numbering more than one hundred in number, the landed property has no parking capacity that can accommodate the tankers. And these always lead the drivers to park on both sides of Webb Road and other adjacent streets, which causes chaotic traffic situation in the area, especially during rush hours to work and return.
Residents have complained bitterly to the managers of the fleet and made spirited efforts to ensure that the operator of the business reverses the situation but to no avail.
State authorities have been intimated about the development but it appears the person(s) behind the property and business have some higher authorities backing them. They have continued to carry on like business as usual.
To this end, here is a call on the Government of Lagos and the Federal Government to come to the residents’ aid because this gross irresponsibility has started taking its toll on the roads. The roads are fast wearing off and becoming damaged.
Now that the rains are here is the most auspicious time for decisive intervention. A stitch in time saves nine!
