Conceit is the finest armour a man can wear but when a woman, amid a parliament of men, dons it with the haughty radiance of a feudal lord, she incites the ceaseless tribute of interminable jeers. Little wonder Hon. Adefunmilayo Tejuoso attracts outrage and widespread disgust over behavior in the House recently.
According to PMnews, the lawmaker representing Mushin Constituency 1 at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Adefunmilayo Tejuosho, on Monday apologised for the way she presented her rejection of a committee she was asked to chair last Monday. She however said she had no apologies for rejecting the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Public Petitions and Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission, LASIEC.
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa had last Monday announced chairmen of the committees, but Tejuosho, who felt she was not respected as one of the oldest members of the House, publicly rejected her committee. At the sitting on Monday, a lawmaker on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and representative of Ajeromi/Ifelodun Constituency 2, Dayo Famakinwa, under personal explanation, had asked the House to educate him on the behaviour of Tejusoho on the floor of the House after the announcement of the committee last week.
Speaker Mudashiru Obasa replied that the business rules and order of the House is against unruly behaviour by any member of the House. She also said she was not aware of any rule of the House that specified how to reject a committee.“I rose up to reject the committee on Judiciary because I spoke to the Speaker about it before then and I expected him to get back to me on the issue. I felt disregarded about the whole thing. “I want to apologise to the whole House about my behaviour after sitting on that day. I don’t have any apology for my rejection and I didn’t know any other way of turning down committee chairmanship,” she said.
Many of her colleagues strongly believe that the female legislator is too arrogant. It would be recalled that Tejuoso had been the deputy speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly but was relieved of this vital position in 2009 for gross misconduct bordering on disrespect to the legislative house and violation of house rules. The impeachment notice had been signed by 30 members of the House and when the speaker, Adeyemi Ikuforiji, finally put the matter to vote, 28 lawmakers voted in favour while three were against with one abstaining. As a matter of fact, many of the then members of Lagos State House of Assembly had argued that Tejuosho could have been impeached long ago but for the intervention of personalities in the state who prevailed on members to sheath their swords.
Till date, many still allege that Hon. Tejuosho hasn’t changed for good. Another factor is her penchant for wearing scandalous dresses. Though, many of her apologists would argue otherwise, the truth is that many a time this popular female legislator puts on dresses that cleverly and sensually expose her cleavages. On several occasions, Hon. Tejuosho had become the cynosure of all eyes at major social events, not because she was the most popular at the events, but because of her revealing and scandalous outfits.
Like a starved greyhound, Funmi Tejuosho swallows her own vomit…..
