• Kogi Senator may have terminated his political future – Pundits
• APC chieftains flay him for ogling party leader, Bola Tinubu’s wife, say she is way out of his league
There is something about Senator Dino Melaye that rankles feminists and the womenfolk. Contemporary feminists would allege that he bares his mind and brandishes his manhood like the antlers of a wild buck. Less judgmental folk would simply dismiss him as a man emotionally stuck at age 14 or thereabouts. Whatever anyone thinks, his alleged attack against fellow senator and two-time First Lady of Lagos State, Remi Tinubu, further diminishes Melaye in the estimation of his peer and even the younger generation. Melaye, in a fit of anger, allegedly threatened to beat Senator Tinubu up and impregnate her.
If the claims are indeed true, the Senator representing Kogi West Constituency may have set in motion the unfortunate plot of his end in the nation’s political and social circuits, so argued feminists and political pundits.
The latter acknowledged that Melaye’s diatribe against Senator Tinubu was unbecoming of a legislator of the hallowed chambers of the Nigerian Senate. According to them, the nation’s National Assembly is expected to be the custodian of the every nation’s morals, and the rights, privileges and laws that govern the society; if the legislative arm of government parades men with the alleged mentality and theatrics of Senator Melaye, then it holds neither hope nor morals for the younger generation. More significantly, any country administered by legislators like Melaye faces a bleak future, according to political pundits and women rights activists.
In another development, prominent chieftains within the All Progressives Congress (APC) condemned Melaye’s recent outburst and likened it to the tantrums of a willful and misdirected teenager. According to a senior chieftain of the party who pleaded anonymity, if Melaye truly said all that had been attributed to him, then he needs to apologise and seek the forgiveness of Remi Tinubu and her husband. According to him, it was unwise of him to have attacked a respectable married woman like Senator Remi. He said that if it was indeed true that Melaye threatened to impregnate the Lagos Senator, then he needs help. Senator Remi is way out of his league, argued the party chieftain.
Melaye incurred massive outrage and widespread condemnation of his alleged attack against Senator Tinubu soon after it was published by Sahara Reporters. The report alleged that Senator Melaye threatened to beat up the wife of the National leader of APC, Bola Tinubu, Senator Remi Tinubu.
According to the report by Sahara Reporters, Senator Melaye made the threats after a rowdy session at the Senate on Tuesday, July 12, 2016. It was further reported that Melaye issued the threat to Tinubu after the Senator representing Lagos Central said the Senate should not be reduced to a stage where Senators could just issue childish threats following plans by some Senators to impeach President Muhammadu Buhari.
Sahara Reporters wrote: “Nigeria’s upper legislative chamber broke into an uproar today with some members threatening President Muhammad Buhari with impeachment, and Dino Melaye threatening to ‘impregnate’ Remi Tinubu, the wife of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Leader.
The Senators who met behind closed doors were incensed by the proposed trial of the leadership of the Senate for forgery. Shortly after that, Senator Dino Melaye (APC Kogi West) said in his remarks that the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, must be brought before the Senate to be thoroughly grilled and humiliated for charging the Senate leadership with forgery in court. Mr. Melaye called on the Senators in attendance to fight the presidency to a standstill. In his rant, he issued a wide variety of threats.
“Recognized to speak, Senator Remi Tinubu (APC) Lagos Central said the Senate should not be reduced to a kindergarten where Senators could just issue childish threats, and called on Senators to close ranks and seek reconciliation amongst its members.
“That was when Melaye flew into rage, calling her names. “I will beat you up on this floor and nothing will happen,” he threatened. The statement caused a commotion on the floor as Senators in her support gathered to protect her. Senate Presient Saraki nodded as Melaye called Mrs. Tinubu unprintable names according to Senators who intervened to save her from the rampaging Melaye.
If the statement credited to Melaye is indeed true, the Kogi Senator will surely have a hard time warming his way back into the hearts of his constituency and the nation’s womenfolk.
