Super Eagles captain John Mikel Obi has assured Nigerians that the country’s flag will be hoisted at the football fiesta 2018 in Russia.
The three-time African champions began their quest to qualifier for the FIFA World Cup with a 2-1 win over Zambia in Ndola on Sunday afternoon.
Two first half goals from England based duo Alex Iwobi and Kelechi Iheanacho gave Nigeria an early advantage but a second half strike from veteran Chipolopolo striker Collins Mbesuma ensued for a nervy finish but the Eagles held on for a vital win.
At a post-match conference after the game, Mikel stated: “Even though the Eagles are in tough group, the players have resolved to grab the qualification ticket in the group.
“I’m excited with young boys in the new Eagles and the current setting of the team reminds me of my days as a new entrant in the Super Eagles.
“I express gratitude to Nigerians and the government for moral and financial support to the squad.”
Nigeria is placed alongside Algeria, Cameroon, and Zambia in Group B.
