In a harrowing incident that has shaken the community of Strand, two men from Khayelitsha, Hlalanathi Dimayi, 26, and Thembinkosi Mtuzula, 46, faced charges of murder in the Strand Magistrate’s Court. The victim, Bongeka Bidi, 41, an official from the City of Cape Town’s Environmental Health Department, was brutally shot multiple times while parked in her silver Toyota Fortuner at the Strand municipal building.
The alleged assailants were apprehended separately by officers from the Provincial Serious and Violence Crimes (Taxi Violence Unit) on Monday and Tuesday following the incident. Dimayi and Mtuzula were identified as the accused during a court appearance on Wednesday, where a solemn atmosphere filled the packed courtroom.
During the proceedings, it was disclosed that the implicated white Opel Astra, used in the crime, was traced back to a property in Site C belonging to Dimayi, who is listed as accused number one. Mtuzula, accused number two, was arrested based on information alleging his involvement.
The court session unfolded with the State requesting a remand, despite objections from Mtuzula’s private attorney, who argued against his client’s connection to the murder. Magistrate Hass eventually granted the State’s request, and the case was adjourned until Monday, 15 January 2024, for bail proceedings and a formal bail application.
The identity of the trigger-puller remains undisclosed, adding an element of mystery to the tragic incident. The Strand community, grappling with the aftermath of the violent shooting, voiced their collective concern. Nicklas Thysen, spokesperson for the Strand Community Policing Forum, expressed the profound impact of the incident on the community and Bidi’s colleagues, stating, “We are against crimes like this against women and children.”
Outside the courtroom, Bidi’s grieving family chose not to comment on the heartbreaking tragedy, underscoring the emotional toll the crime has taken on the victim’s loved ones. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains united in condemnation of such heinous acts, emphasizing the need for justice and a safer environment for all.
