How his failure to write a will tore his family apart
The sound of boondocks urchins baying for blood over street spoils pales in comparison to the shrill cacophony of discord wracking the household of late Patrick Yakowa. Since the demise of the former Kaduna governor on December 15, 2012, in a helicopter crash, strife has hung on his estate like discordant minims.
The resonance is dire as his wife, Amina, and her four children engage Yakowa’s son by another woman, in a dirty fight over his property.
In the melee, savagery, and ugliness become a prime sport as they pull no punches and hurl audible chords of discontent at each other in reckless abandon.
Between the words spoken and unspoken, the peace of the household is shattered beyond repair. Malice rustles with untimely percussion, ripping apart the harmony that hitherto held the family together while its patriarch was alive.
Findings on Patrick Yakowa family dispute revealed that Yakowa’s wife, a retired Deputy Director with the Federal Civil Service, has formed a common front with her four children against her stepson, who has been fighting tooth and nail to ensure he gets something substantial from his father’s estate.
The major cause of the discord among the hitherto close-knit siblings is one of late Yakowa’s choicest properties, the Mediterranean Hotel, a four-star edifice, which is located in Asokoro, Abuja. The said son was said to also have shown interest in the massive park in Asokoro equally owned by the deceased.
It would be recalled that Yakowa died intestate in a naval helicopter crash along with the former National Security Adviser (NSA) Gen. Owoye Andrew Azazi (rtd), and four others while flying from Bayelsa state to Port Harcourt. They were returning from the funeral of Oronto Douglas’ father in Bayelsa state.
Having died without writing a will or making informal provisions for how his estate would be shared among his family, the latter have been embroiled in serious wrangling and infighting that has segmented the family along with the warring camps and pitted them in an irreconcilable Patrick Yakowa family dispute over his estate.
