The Tiv Traditional Council has successfully orchestrated a reconciliation between Governor Hyacinth Alia and the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.
The rift between Alia and Akume, both influential figures within Benue’s political landscape, had escalated in recent months, culminating in the emergence of a rival faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Executive Council, backed by Alia’s supporters.
Concerned by the deepening divide and its potential ramifications for the state’s cohesion, the Tiv paramount ruler, Prof James Ayatse, and the Tiv Traditional Council intervened to facilitate dialogue and reconciliation.
In a press briefing following the reconciliation talks, Ayatse expressed satisfaction with the outcome, revealing that both parties had reached a mutual agreement to set aside their political differences in the interest of Benue’s progress.
He emphasized the importance of unity and cooperation in advancing the state’s development agenda, underscoring the significance of burying past grievances for the collective good.
“The two leaders have agreed to put aside their political differences and work for the progress of Benue.
“Today, I called the Governor of Benue, Rev Fr Alia, and the SGF, Sen George Akume, to discuss with them because of reports that we have received about conflicts between them,” Ayatse stated.
