The Senate on Wednesday, 22nd June, 2016 considered the report of the Senate Committee on Land Transport ably Chaired by Senator Olugbenga Ashafa representing Lagos East Senatorial District on the Nigerian Railway Corporation Repeal and Reenactment Bill, 2016.
The Bill (Nigerian Railway Corporation Bill) was sponsored by Distinguished Senator (Dr) Andy Uba, MFR and passed through the first reading on Tuesday, 23rd June, 2015, and the second reading on Tuesday, 6th October 2015.
The committee held its public hearing in relation to the bill on, 25th of April 2016, which had in attendance stakeholders across the rail sector. Most of the Stakeholders made their input on the bill through briefs submitted to the Senate Committee on Land Transport.
It is significant to note that, the bill, when passed into law, it would provide the adequate and contemporary legislative framework required to revamp the Nigerian Rail Sector and allow both Private Sector Participation and state government participation in the Rail Sector.
Some of the recommendations of the Ashafa led committee on Land Transport, include the separation of the Operation and Regulatory aspects of the Nigerian Rail Sector and the creation of the legislative framework for private and state participation in the rail Sector.
The line by line-by-line consideration of the report would come up when the Senate resumes from its impending Two weeks break.
