Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has provided insights into the concerns raised by the northern region and various stakeholders regarding the Tax Reform Bills proposed by President Bola Tinubu.
Governor Zulum expressed that there is a belief that these tax reforms may primarily benefit Lagos State, potentially hindering progress in the northern region. In an interview with BBC News Hausa, he emphasized that the impact of these reforms could extend beyond the north, affecting areas in the South East, South South, and South West as well.
He suggests that a more inclusive approach to tax reform could better serve the interests of all regions in Nigeria. …CONTINUE READING
In his view, Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, and Ondo will also have problems.
He added that some supporters of the bill are of the opinion that the proposed bill could put Lagos at a disadvantage; but according to him, if that is the case, they do not wish for any such disadvantages to affect Lagos State.
Zulum, therefore, urged President Tinubu to revisit the tax reform bills in light of the fact that he received 60% of his votes from the northern region.
The Governor advised the President that he should ignore voices suggesting that the northern population does not support him as that perception is inaccurate.
The Borno Governor emphasized that all they want is for him to withdraw the tax reform bills.
The position of Governor Zulum comes at a time when the Senate has advanced the Tax Reform Bills to second reading amidst the opposition against it and controversies it has already generated.
Naija News gathered that the bills passed second reading after the majority leader of the senate, Opeyemi Bamidele, led a debate on them on Thursday.
