The Presidential Candidate of Labour Party (LP) in 2023, Mr Peter Obi, Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and two LP serving Senators in Anambra State, Victor Umeh and Tony Nwoye were conspicuously absent at the national convention of the party.
The convention held on Wednesday at Nnewi, Nnewi North North Local Government Area of Anambra state amidst tight security and had the factional National Chairman of the party, Mr Julius Abure re-elected.
However, unlike Obi and two senators, Governor Otti was represented at the event by his deputy, Mr Ikechukwu Emetu, who was the returning officer and chairman of the convention.
The convention also reelected seven other National Working Committee (NWC) members of the party, while 14 others were dropped either for non-performance or having served out the allowable number of years as per the party’s constitution.
Some of the officers who stepped down for having served out their tenures were Chief Innocent Sunday Okeke, the immediate past Asst National chairman (South East) and former National Organising Secretary, Chief Clement Ojukwu is now the deputy National Chairman.
Many journalists were not allowed access to the venue of the event for no known reason.
