Bayelsa Governorship Elections: Police Arrest Thugs In Bayelsa State

Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Bayelsa Police Command, Asinim Butswat, claimed that police arrested the individuals believed to be responsible for violence in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area (LGA).
Mr. Butswat stated that contrary to earlier media reports claiming that 4 people were killed in a violent clash only one person was injured in the violent clash between rival gunmen and security forces.
“We have made some arrests and normalcy has been restored to the area. Security reinforcements were sent to Oporoma [the town where the attack occurred],” the PRO stated.
Despite the arrests, both the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and police announced that the election in some parts of Southern Ijaw LGA had to be postponed. According to the Premium Times, the postponement was required due to the parts of the LGA starting the election late. The late start was most likely caused by the violence earlier reported in the area.
