Strong indications have emerged that former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, may formally obtain his membership card of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) on Wednesday.

Sources within the leadership of the party disclosed to The Whistler on Tuesday that Kwankwaso is expected to register as a member in his hometown, Kwankwaso, located in Madobi Local Government Area of Kano State.

Kwankwaso, who was the presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the 2023 presidential election, has recently hosted key figures of the ADC at his residence in Kano.

The visits have intensified speculation about a possible defection to the opposition party.

Among those who recently met met with him was the 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi.

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also held a meeting with Kwankwaso amid growing reports that the former Kano governor may be considering a political realignment.

Makinde is a leading figure in a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) aligned with Kabiru Turaki, SAN.

PDP crisis deepens

The Turaki-led faction of the PDP has remained locked in a prolonged leadership dispute with another group aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Both camps have continued to lay claim to the party’s leadership, while reconciliation efforts have yet to produce a breakthrough.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the ADC on Tuesday received the report of its constitution review committee.

The report was received by the party’s National Legal Adviser, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor, on behalf of the National Chairman, Senator David Mark.

In a speech read on his behalf by Osunbor, Mark emphasised that the constitution review must reflect the current political realities.

He added that the revised constitution should strengthen internal democracy, transparency, and accountability within the party.

“I am particularly encouraged that this review process involved wide consultations across the states, zones, and critical stakeholders of our party,” the statement read.

“This inclusive approach reinforces our belief that the ADC belongs to all its members, irrespective of status or position.”

Mark assured party members that the National Working Committee would carefully study the committee’s recommendations.

“As we receive this report today, let me assure you that the National Working Committee will carefully study its recommendations with utmost seriousness,” he added.
