The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

Naija News reports that the Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the holidays in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on Monday in Abuja.

The government said the declaration reflected its respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of millions of Nigerian Muslims joining the global Islamic community to observe the sacred occasion.

Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and the diaspora on the celebration.

He described Eid-el-Kabir as a festival of deep spiritual significance rooted in sacrifice, obedience to God and compassion for others.

The Federal Government urged Nigerians to use the period for prayer and sober reflection.

It also called on citizens to seek divine guidance for the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security and prosperity.

“It is in the spirit of brotherhood, shared humanity, and national unity that the Federal Government wishes all Muslims a peaceful, blessed, and joyous celebration,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Headquarters, Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, has said comprehensive security arrangements have been put in place ahead of the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

Naija News reports that the command said the measures were aimed at ensuring a safe and secure environment for residents across the North-East during the festive period.

This was contained in a statement by the Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force North-East, Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Sani Uba.

The command said credible intelligence indicated that remnants of Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists might attempt isolated attacks during the celebration.
