In a significant step aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership crisis within the Lagos State House of Assembly, the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) directed both Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda, and Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, to resign from their positions.

The GAC has also announced that a new Speaker will be selected from Lagos West and revealed that the new Speaker would be named on Wednesday.

The GAC has been actively involved in attempts to mediate and address the leadership crisis. In a statement issued after a meeting, GAC members acknowledged the internal strife but made it clear that party directives must take precedence over the actions of individual lawmakers.

According to the GAC’s spokesperson, Chief Olusi, the council emphasized that lawmakers should not have acted unilaterally in removing or installing leaders without consulting the party first.

“It is for the party to decide. The lawmakers have no absolute power to remove and install their leaders,” Olusi remarked, underscoring the importance of maintaining party unity and discipline.

The GAC’s resolution outlined the following actions:

Mojisola Meranda is to resign by Monday (March 3).

Mudashiru Obasa is to return to the Assembly and submit his resignation as well.

Both resignation letters are expected to be delivered to the GAC by Wednesday (March 5).

A new Speaker will be announced from Lagos West on Wednesday.

Olusi also addressed rumors of divisions within the GAC, downplaying claims of internal conflicts and reaffirming that any dissenting opinions from some members did not reflect the council’s official stance. He assured party members and the public that the GAC has established effective mechanisms for resolving disputes and urged patience as the leadership issue is addressed.

“This issue will be resolved very soon. Disputes and differences are part of life, but we have established ways to settle them within the party,” Olusi added, signaling a desire for a swift resolution to the crisis.

The political drama in the Lagos State House of Assembly has drawn significant attention in recent weeks, with many eyes now fixed on the GAC’s next move. As both Obasa and Meranda prepare to step down in the coming days, the selection of a new Speaker from Lagos West is expected to be a critical moment in the resolution of the conflict.

With the legal battles ongoing and political maneuvering intensifying, the GAC’s decision to assert control over the Assembly leadership highlights the party’s commitment to restoring order and unity within Lagos State’s legislative arm. Whether the crisis will be fully resolved by Wednesday remains to be seen, but for now, all attention is focused on the GAC’s leadership choices and the potential impact on the Assembly’s future direction.
