Hardship: Govt Approves N50,000 Relief Package For Workers in Lagos

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has authorised a relief package of N50,000 for workers in the state for May, aimed at alleviating the effects of increasing economic pressures.

This announcement was made during the 2026 Workers’ Day celebration at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos, which focused on the theme “Insecurity, Poverty – Bane of Decent Work.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented by Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, stated that this payment would be incorporated into the May salaries of workers and will be reviewed in the future.

The initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to supporting workers across various sectors.

The governor emphasized the essential role that teachers, health workers, artisans, and civil servants play in driving Lagos’s continued development.

“Lagos is great because of you—the teacher who stays after hours, the nurse who takes a third shift, the artisan who passes on their trade to the next generation,” he said.

Sanwo-Olu acknowledged prevailing economic challenges, including inflationary pressures and global energy shocks, stressing that government must continue to respond with practical support for workers.

“For this May, there will be an additional N50,000 for every worker in Lagos State, across board, irrespective of grade,” he announced.

The governor announced that the gesture will be reevaluated in the coming months. He took the opportunity to reiterate his administration’s dedication to enhancing workers’ welfare, developing infrastructure, and improving public service delivery.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining open communication with organized labor, highlighting that collaboration with unions is crucial for achieving industrial harmony.

On the topic of security, Sanwo-Olu stated that safety is essential for productivity. He mentioned ongoing investments in security infrastructure, community policing, and surveillance systems, all aimed at creating a safer environment for both workers and residents.

Furthermore, the governor outlined his administration’s commitment to completing key projects before the end of its term, focusing on transport infrastructure, housing initiatives, and fulfilling pension obligations.

He concluded by asserting that the effectiveness of his administration would be evaluated based on completed projects and sustained reforms rather than mere announcements.
