In a historic show of unity and commitment to grassroots sports development, some of Nigeria’s most influential leaders, sports icons, and corporate powerhouses have rallied behind the highly anticipated South West Games 2025. Scheduled to take place from March 26 to 28, 2025 in Lagos, this premier sporting event is set to revolutionize athletics in the region, while unlocking new economic and developmental opportunities.

Among the distinguished figures who have thrown their weight behind the tournament are Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, Osun State Governor Senator Ademola Adeleke, Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, former Ogun State Governor Aremo Olusegun Osoba (CFR), the Ooni of Ife, HRM Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, legendary footballer Segun Odegbami (MON), and former Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Pinnick, Lagos State Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo, Chief Folorunsho Coker, Otunba Segun Runsewe, among others. Their collective endorsement signals a groundbreaking commitment to elevating sports as a vital tool for national development, tourism, and youth empowerment.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lagos, the President of the Organizing Committee, Akogun Olanrewaju Alfred, highlighted the significance of these high-caliber endorsements, emphasizing their far-reaching impact on sports and economic progress in the South West.

“With such formidable personalities backing this initiative, the South West Games 2025 is positioned to redefine regional sports development. This isn’t just about competition—it’s about creating a thriving ecosystem for sports, boosting investments, and harnessing the boundless potential of young Nigerian athletes,” Alfred stated.

Beyond fostering athletic excellence, the South West Games 2025 will be a major catalyst for economic growth, creating employment opportunities, stimulating commerce, and boosting tourism. Local businesses, hospitality sectors, and service industries are set to benefit immensely from the influx of athletes, sports enthusiasts, and spectators who will converge in the region for the event.

The tournament will feature over 1,200 athletes and 120 officials competing in multiple sporting disciplines, making it one of the largest regional sporting gatherings in recent history. A major highlight of the games will be the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Southwest Alliance Games (BATSWAG), a sub-event dedicated to nurturing young talents under the age of 18. This visionary initiative has been hailed as a strategic step towards grassroots sports development, providing young Nigerian athletes with an unprecedented platform to showcase their abilities on a national and global scale.

The groundswell of support extends beyond political and sports figures, as Nigeria’s corporate titans have also thrown their weight behind the tournament. Leading financial institutions such as First Bank and United Bank for Africa (UBA), alongside energy giant AITEO, have pledged their support, recognizing the tournament’s transformative potential in uniting sports and commerce.

As preparations gain momentum, anticipation is soaring for what promises to be a landmark moment in Nigerian sports history. With its promise of fostering talent, creating jobs, and driving regional economic vibrancy, the South West Games 2025 is more than a tournament—it is a movement, a celebration of resilience, and a testament to the boundless potential of sports as a tool for national transformation.

With excitement mounting and the countdown officially underway, the South West Games 2025 is poised to deliver an unforgettable sporting spectacle that will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come
