Tragedy struck on Wednesday morning at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Ibadan, as a stampede occurred during a children’s Christmas party, resulting in the deaths of several children.

The party was organized by Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Ibadan, led by Oriyomi Hamzat, in collaboration with Queen Naomi Silekunola Ogunwusi, the ex-wife of the Ooni of Ife.

The exact number of fatalities and injuries is still unknown, but the incident has sent shockwaves through the community.…CONTINUE READING

The gathering, which was held at the Islamic High School in the Bashorun area of Ibadan, attracted a massive crowd, with attendees arriving from neighboring towns.

Some attendees reportedly camped overnight at the venue, responding to publicity from a popular Ibadan-based radio station.

Eyewitnesses told the BBC that the stampede began shortly after the program started, as the overwhelming crowd struggled for space. Conflicting reports suggest that the death toll may be higher, with some claiming four children lost their lives. However, the BBC has not independently verified this.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Adewale Osifeso, stated that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

Concerned parents are advised to visit the following hospitals in Ibadan for information about their children, providing valid identification:

Patnas Specialist Hospital, Basorun, Western Hospital, Basorun, Ringroad State Hospital, Molly Specialist Hospital, University College Hospital (UCH).

The Oyo State Government reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of its residents and urged event organizers to prioritize crowd control and safety measures in future gatherings.
