Oba Olakulehin was officially installed as the 43rd Olubadan on July 12, 2024, following months of deliberation and anticipation. His ascension to the throne marked a new chapter in Ibadan’s rich history, and many had hoped that his reign would be free from unnecessary controversy. However, the spread of unfounded claims regarding his well-being suggests that not everyone is willing to let Ibadan enjoy a peaceful transition.

The recent wave of speculation surrounding the health of the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has left many wondering: Who stands to gain from spreading such unverified rumors? At a time when Ibadan should be focusing on growth and unity under the leadership of its new monarch, the distractions caused by false reports only serve to create unnecessary tension. …CONTINUE READING

The Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatunbosun, has firmly dismissed the rumors, emphasizing that the Olubadan is alive, hale, and hearty. “I spoke with one of the sons who represented the family at the coronation committee, Prince Olaseke Owolabi Olakulehin,” the commissioner stated, putting to rest the unsettling speculations.

In a society where traditional institutions hold significant influence, the health and stability of a monarch can become a subject of intense speculation. But beyond mere curiosity, one must ask: What do the rumor-mongers hope to achieve? Could it be a politically motivated attempt to destabilize the city’s leadership? Or is it simply a case of misinformation spiraling out of control in the age of social media?

Historically, Ibadan’s leadership has been built on a unique and structured succession plan, ensuring that the transition from one Olubadan to another follows due process. Any attempt to spread panic about the monarch’s health disrupts this structure and could create unnecessary division among traditional and political stakeholders.

In an era where fake news spreads like wildfire, the media and the public must exercise caution. It is essential for credible sources to verify information before amplifying it. The public, too, must resist the temptation to engage in rumor-sharing, especially when it concerns sensitive topics like the well-being of a traditional ruler.

While the commissioner’s statement should serve as reassurance, this incident highlights the broader issue of misinformation and its potential to cause unrest. As Ibadan continues to evolve and modernize, there must be collective responsibility to protect its institutions from baseless speculations.

Oba Olakulehin’s reign has just begun, and Ibadan must rally behind him to ensure a stable and prosperous future. Rather than allowing unfounded rumors to shape public discourse, attention should be placed on the monarch’s vision for Ibadan and how his leadership can drive development.

For those who are behind these rumors, it is time to reflect: Is there any real benefit in sowing discord? The Olubadan stool remains a symbol of tradition, unity, and progress, and Ibadan must not allow the spread of falsehoods to undermine its legacy.
