Chairman Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmud Yakubu is fast gaining the reputation as an inconclusive chairman. Since the INEC boss assumed office, he has conducted three major elections: Kogi, Bayelsa and Rivers all with one outcome – Inconclusive. We all know filling the shoes of Prof Attahiru Jega was going to be an almost impossible task for the new INEC boss, but Prof Yakubu so far is not even helping himself. He has shown so far lack of capacity to conduct elections. The indecision of INEC in Kogi contributed a great deal to the constitutional crisis that hit the state after the death of Prince Abubakar Audu.
In the coming Edo and Ondo elections, we all know what the outcome will be, another round of inconclusive elections. The coming elections in Ondo and Edo are Prof Yakubu’s last chance to redeem himself. Any inconclusive results, then he should be shown the door. Imagine Prof Yakubu’s INEC conducting the presidential elections in the 36 states in 2019, it will take another year for them to announce the results. So far, the INEC boss has shown he is ill prepared for the job and needs to up his game for Nigeria to have successful elections in the future. Anything below the standard of the 2015 elections will not be acceptable.
