Newly crowned African Footballer Of the Year, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he is proud to be the first Gabonese to win the prestigious award, Completesportsnigeria.com reports.

Speaking after he was crowned on Thursday in Abuja, the Borussia Dortmund striker who has scored 27 goals for his side through all competitions so far this season, thanked the people of Gabon for their support.

“I thank the people of Gabon, this award is for them. I’m very happy to be the first Gabonese to win the award. I want to thank my teammates in the national team and also at Dortmund. It is their work that helps me to score goals. For the parents of the youth of Africa, please give your kids a chance to realise their dreams,” Aubameyang said in his acceptance speech.

Aubameyang beat Yaya Toure who has won the award fourth times to the 2015 Glo-CAF Award.

The Gabon skipper failed to send the Panthers to the knockout stage of the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations, while Yaya Touré led the Elephants to their first continental crown since 1992. He will carry the honour for another one year when another edition will be held.
